Settle for less at work

Why do we settle for less at work in 2019?

When I’m at home I’m offered services that are so easy to sign up to, that I almost don’t have to do anything. They almost feel magical in comparison to how it can be at work. I can focus on consuming the service, product or content, I also get presented with personal and direct advertisements, that almost feels unreal on how good they are on knowing what I want. I sign up for services that utilize all my personal data, to deliver a much personalized service as possible. All of this is so easy, it feels like a smooth one-click experience. Why can’t we have that at work?

“Why is there a difference between me as a consumer and me as an employee?”

At work I have to fill out several forms, sometimes on paper, just to get access to certain information. Then I have to find all the people who can sign the papers, wait for each step without a clear status progress. And don’t get me started on ordering stuff at work, that’s usually even harder. Why is there a difference between me as a consumer and me as an employee?

“Why do so many organizations struggle with providing a seamless digital service for us as employees, that makes us feel more like humans, than machines?”

Finally, the biggest challenge today is probably the on- and off-boarding of employees for an organization, making it a hazzle for all people involved. Why do so many organizations struggle in providing a seamless digital service for us as employees, that makes us feel more like humans than machines. Here we have a homework to do.

Why should this matter to you?

How much time do you spend at the office thinking about work or commuting? In average most of us spend at least 9-10h at work or commuting to it and spend about 6-8 hours on sleep. When calculating on it, it means you will spend more than 50% of your time awake at work or thinking about work. Shouldn’t that half of your time be friction free, and why should it be any different from how you consume services at home as a consumer? I believe all of us are worth a friction free workday that works with us, not against us.

Secondly it is a good market for many of us as employees today. We have the power. It is not a supplier marker, it is our market as employees and as humans. So now we have the possibility to make it important. Still we settle for it, and complain or just get used to it. Please don’t settle for it and make it important. Make your work life important.

What do you think about this? Why do we settle for less at work? How can we change this? And how do you handle this in your organization? In the next blog/vlog we will examine the organizational perspective. Why is it important for you as a leader and C-level executive to focus on a fiction free workday? Connect with us and let us know what your thoughts are.

At the end of the day, we are just a team who wants to change the world to a better place, where people are a little bit happier by creating a friction free workday.

Think big, continuously act small and aim to be awesome!
